Every year, over 60 million people visit New York City. It’s truly one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the entire world.
If you’re planning a trip to New York City in the spring and are trying to figure out what to pack, I’ve got your back! As a seasoned New Yorker, I’ll share exactly what you should pack, what New Yorkers wear, and make a few suggestions for things that are best left at home.
While a lot of these suggestions are relevant year-round, this packing list is made with a spring trip in mind. If you’re traveling to NYC in the winter months, check out this post with winter essentials to survive the cold!

Spring Temperature in New York
If you’re not from the Northeast, keep in mind that the weather can really fluctuate. I’m talking cold and snowy today and 70° and sunny tomorrow. NYC has gotten snow as late as March or even April, and although that isn’t typical, be prepared for a range of temperatures.
For reference, here is the average spring temperature in New York you can expect:
- March Temperatures in New York City: 50° F High, 35° F Low
- April Temperatures in New York City: 62° F High, 44° F Low
- May Temperatures in New York City: 71° F High, 54° F Low
- June Temperatures in New York City: 79° F High, 63° F Low
What New Yorkers Are Wearing
The stereotypes are true, New Yorkers really do wear a lot of black and generally dark colors. But you’ll also find incredible street style as well. There’s no dress code and no reason to dress a certain way. Wear what makes you happy, and you’ll fit right in – that’s the beauty of NYC.
NYC Packing List for Spring
1. Comfortable Shoes
Get ready to walk a lot. Over the Brooklyn Bridge, through Central Park, down Broadway – wherever your itinerary takes you, you’ll probably clock record miles. And if your feet are hurting, you’ll feel miserable all day.
Cushioned, platform running sneakers are having a huge moment in NYC. They’re really as comfortable as they look so take advantage of the chance to just wear the comfort shoes. Grab a pair of Hokas or New Balance sneakers and you’ll be golden.
For more low-profile sneakers, check out Vejas.
I like to pack a pair of dressier shoes as well to wear to dinner, Broadway shows, the ballet, opera, or any other fancy activity. These boots or these loafers would completely fit the bill!

2. Lightweight Jackets
For spring, I’d recommend a lightweight denim jacket or trench coat.
I personally always pack a puffer jacket. In my opinion, it’s part of the New York starter pack, specifically the Uniqlo heat tech puffer, which I see so many people wearing on its own or layering under other jackets. Trust me on this, having a lightweight down puffer jacket will save you on those colder days! It packs up super tiny, weighs next to nothing, and actually keeps you warm. I’ve also heard great things about this jacket that’s only $30 on Amazon!
3. Tops & Bottoms
Now that we have the most important layers taken care of, it’s time to pack some tops and bottoms.
You’ll want to have a mix of weights, so you’re prepared for any temperature. Pack some short and long sleeve t-shirts and blouses as well as a sweater or two so you can layer depending on the weather.
And for bottoms, most people in New York are wearing jeans. You’ll see lots of light/medium-washed Levi’s and vintage-style dad jeans.
For a pair of more exciting pants, I love these pleated pants, which are super comfortable and look great with sneakers or these leather pants to spice things up.
4. Dress Up Outfit
You never know where NYC will take you so it’s good to have a fancy outfit up your sleeve.
You can never go wrong with a black dress like this one here.
Or wear the leather pants from above with a blouse!

5. Toiletries
Depending on if you’re staying in a hotel/Airbnb or with family or friends, what you pack for toiletries may differ. Remember, anything can be bought in NYC and there’s always a Duane Reade around the corner.
Here’s a brief list of some essentials:
- Toothbrush
- Toothpaste
- Deodorant
- Body Wash
- Shampoo
- Face Wash
And a good moisturizer with SPF is a must!
6. Accessories
Don’t forget your accessories.
For the spring, I’d still pack a lightweight scarf and some gloves just to be safe.
7. Tech
Did you pack all of your chargers, batteries, and cables? One thing I recommend all of my friends to bring is a portable phone charger. They’re always glad to have it when their phone inevitably dies in the middle of the day.

8. Travel Bag + Outfit
Rolling luggage isn’t always the most comfortable in NYC. If you’re taking the train from the airport or walking on sidewalks and streets, it can be annoying to roll your suitcase around. If you’re going on a short trip, I recommend a large backpack as it’s generally a lot more compact for traveling. This Patagonia bag has convenient straps or duffel handles, seriously one of the best travel bags on the market!
And of course, you’ll want a comfortable travel outfit (which could double as a lounge outfit or pajama during your trip).
What To Leave At Home
And now for what not to pack for NYC.
Money Belt: I would say that NYC doesn’t have a lot of pick-pocketing. At least I’ve never seen it happen and don’t know anybody who has ever had anything stolen off them. Of course, you’ll want to pay attention to your surroundings and not leave your things unattended but my personal opinion is that a money belt is just plain inconvenient.
High Heels: Unless you’re used to walking far in high heels, I would recommend you leave them at home. You won’t see many New Yorkers wearing them out either, we really are creatures of comfort!
Umbrella: Umbrellas can be clunky to travel with and take up a lot of space/weight. If it rains, you can easily buy an umbrella for $10 or less at a bodega or souvenir shop.
