9 Best Movie Theaters in Manhattan for Cinephiles

In New York City, cultural experiences abound. From Broadway shows to gallery openings, locals place a huge premium on arts and culture. Although some may argue that movie theaters are nearing extinction with the rise of streaming services, that’s anything but true in Manhattan, where going to the movies is a regular activity.

And, of course, in NYC, nothing comes without options. We’ve got movie theaters with reclining seats and food delivered straight to you, and we’ve got elegant theaters that show only vintage films.

So let’s dive into 9 of the best movie theaters in Manhattan!

1. Angelika

best movie theaters in Manhattan

We have Angelika to thank for making Indie and foreign films accessible in Manhattan.

The first location opened in NoHo in 1989 and has since expanded to another location in East Village (called Village East) as well as theaters in Texas, Washington D.C., California, and Virginia.

If you’re trying to impress a movie buff, this is the place to take them! The film roster is updated regularly, and you can often catch exclusive premieres at Angelika.

2. IPIC

For a movie experience with all of the amenities, book your ticket at IPIC. Guests enjoy plush, reclining chairs equipped with blankets and pillows. If that’s not enough, there’s an extensive menu of snacks, drinks/cocktails, and meals that you can order straight to your seat.

This is a fun spot to keep in mind for a date night or a family-friendly activity. And if you’re looking to go out with a large group of people, you can rent out a lounge.

3. Paris Theater

best movie theater NYC

The Paris Theater is a personal favorite in the list of best movie theaters in Manhattan. It was opened in 1948 and was Manhattan’s largest single-screen movie theater (a movie theater with only a single screen in it), seating 571 guests. And now, it’s the last single-screen theater left in the city.

Everything about this theater feels classy and sophisticated – from the vintage marquee sign displaying the movie titles to the velvet interior to the concession stand selling pastries and teas. And, of course, the neighboring Plaza Hotel, only a few steps away.

The Paris Theater nearly closed but was purchased by Netflix in 2019 and has been used for artist talks, premieres, and movie screenings. It’s a great theater to watch for events. When Emily In Paris season 2 launched, New Yorkers had the chance to preview the season before it was released and meet the cast!

4. Metrograph

Metrograph is a relatively new theater but has quickly become a favorite among locals and movie buffs. This theater is a nod to the movie-going culture of times past, with a candy counter in the lobby and wooden theater seats lined in velvet. And, of course, its indie films, all of which were filmed in 35mm. At Metrograph, you’ll also find a bookstore carrying books only about cinema, as well as a bar, and a full restaurant.

Located in the West Village, Film Forum is a favorite theater among New Yorkers. It opened in 1970 as an “alternative screening space for independent films,” and it has one of the most diverse selections. This is the best place to go to see your favorite classic movie on a big screen and discover new indie and international films.

6. IFC Center

The IFC Center is another West Village theater that’s a must-visit movie theater in Manhattan. Here you can choose from over a dozen movies playing daily, ranging from the latest releases to indie films.

Cinephiles will want to check out IFC Center’s events which include DOC NYC, America’s largest documentary festival, every November and the gallery where you can view vintage movie posters.

7. MoMA

Did you know the Museum of Modern Art has movie theaters? Three, to be precise! The film curators do an excellent job choosing a selection of films that rotate every 3-4 weeks.

At the MoMA theater, you can catch classic films, new films, films from festivals, as well as artist talks and documentaries. It’s a lovely way to spend a rainy afternoon.

And if you’re a MoMA museum member, movie admission is free!

8. Regal Cinemas

If you want to watch the mainstream titles in the comfiest seats in town, Regal Cinemas is the place to go. Unlike IPIC, where the seats are made to accommodate dining, the seats at Regal Cinemas are straight recliners. Grab your popcorn, kick back, and enjoy the latest flick.

9. Outdoor Movies

We have to give an honorable mention for outdoor movies because they’re such a special part of New York City culture – where parks and movies meet.

During the summer months, many parks will host movie screenings, inviting viewers to sit out on the lawn and watch a movie for free. You can find something for any interest: noir, romance, action, sci-fi, comedy, and lots of family-friendly movies too.
