New York City is a wonderful place where everything abounds. Anything you want, you can find in the city. Today we’re sharing the best bakeries in Manhattan. The city is chock full of them and if you pay attention, you’ll notice it’s hard to pass a block without stumbling across a bakery selling fresh cookies, bread, cakes, croissants, or other treats. With all of the options, it can be overwhelming to choose which bakeries to try. That’s why we’re sharing the best bakeries in Manhattan from a New Yorker’s perspective.
1. Mah-Ze-Dahr
This recently opened bakery didn’t take long to make it on the map. Mah-Ze-Dahr is the Urdu word that describes the taste essence of food and its flavor and magic. That definitely translates to the offerings you’ll find on the menu which mix a variety of cultures. It was opened by Umber Ahmad who was a semi-finalist for a James Beard Award so it comes as no surprise that everything in the bakery is 10/10.
2. Dominique Ansel
Dominique Ansel is home to the original “cronut” or croissant donut. Each month they introduce a new flavor of filling for these doughy treats. The bakery also serves French classics like croissants, cannele, and kouign amann. Or you can opt for their inventive treats like frozen s’mores during the winter, watermelon ice cream during the summer, or a cookie shot (a cup made of a cookie filled with Madagascan vanilla milk).
3. Lady M
At Lady M, you can try a cake you’ve probably never tried before. The Japanese mille crepes cake famously combines French crepes with Asian flavors. The result is a towering stack of twenty crepes with a creamy filling layered in between with flavors like matcha, passion fruit, chocolate, and vanilla. It looks like a work of art but tastes incredible too.
4. Magnolia Bakery
This one’s a must for any fan of Sex and the City! While Magnolia Bakery earned some screen time on the iconic tv show, it’s famous for its delicious treats. Most will know them for their bread pudding, but they make divine cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. This is a great place to keep in mind if you need to order a cake or cupcakes for a party.

5. Angelina Bakery
Straight from Paris, Angelina Bakery is a sophisticated bakery and tea room. It’s the first location in the United States, and definitely feels like you’re transported to Paris. Try their decadent hot chocolate, macarons, croissants, and delicate French cakes and eclairs.
6. Breads Bakery
Breads Bakery is an all-around winner. From the baguettes to the challah to the croissants to the black and white cookies. And, of course, to the famous babka, which is considered to be the best in New York City. It’s a great place to stock up on a variety of sweets and some fresh bread.
7. Fabrique
One of the most exciting things about living in New York City is the access to…everything! After learning about Swedish cardamom buns on the internet, we went on a journey to find some in New York City and were so excited to discover that we even had options to choose from?!
Fabrique came out on top by a long shot. If you’ve never tried a cardamom bun, this is the place to go. It’s similar to a cinnamon bun in shape and texture but has cardamom seeds baked into the dough and a light glazed top. Their menu also includes cinnamon buns, brownies, Swedish breads and buns, and other desserts.

8. Levain
Arguably the best cookies in New York City? It’s a debate that might go on forever, but Levain is certainly among the top contenders. These cookies are thick and gooey and have a very cozy and heartwarming quality to them.
The menu is simple, with only a handful of flavors (chocolate chip, chocolate chip + walnut, oatmeal raisin, dark chocolate peanut butter chip, and dark chocolate chip) but they hit each of them out of the park. For a classic choice, go with the chocolate chip + walnut! They also have a few other pastries like breads and rolls, but the cookies are certainly the star of the show.
9. Sullivan Street Bakery
This Italian bakery churns out some of the best old-school bread. Whether you’re at Sullivan Street Bakery for a loaf of bread, focaccia, pizza, or a sandwich, you won’t be disappointed. They also have sweets on their menu, like the classic bomboloni stuffed with jam or cream, as well as other cookies, tarts, cakes, and even panettone bread during the holiday season.
10. Little Cupcake Bakeshop
Food & Wine named Little Cupcake Bakeshop as the best cupcakes in the United States. Their signature flavor at this darling family-owned cupcake shop is the Brooklyn Blackout, but they also have red velvet, carrot cake, vanilla bean, strawberry shortcake, cookie dough, and more. And they make a large selection of gluten-free options as well!
11. Laduree
If you’ve never experienced a classic French macaron, Laduree will give you that picture-perfect, dreamy experience. Visiting the bakery, choosing the flavors, and opening up the iconic mint green box is half of the fun but the macarons are to die for as well.

12. Bread Alone Bakery
This one isn’t technically located in Manhattan as the main bakeries are in Hudson Valley and the Catskills, but it’s a favorite of ours and had to be squeezed into the list.
But don’t worry, you don’t have to travel far to try some of the best bread, muffins, cookies, and croissants as you can find Bread Alone Bakery vendors at nearly every farmer’s market in Manhattan. Their bread is also carried in many New York supermarkets, so be on the lookout!
