This post is all about NYC theater discounts young adults.
New York City is the theater capital of the world, but seeing a show can be expensive, that is unless you know where to look. When I moved to NYC at 22, I was eager to enjoy all of the cultural experiences NYC has to offer and was determined to figure out every trip and hack and today I’m sharing everything I know with you!
Luckily, there are plenty of ways for young adults to score discounted tickets to Broadway, ballet, opera, and more.
Whether you’re a recent NYC transplant or a longtime local, here’s how to take advantage of the best NYC discounts for cultural attractions.
9 NYC Theater Discounts for Young Adults
1. NYC Ballet $30 for 30 and Under
The New York City Ballet has my heart! The magnificent David H. Koch theater captivates with its red velvet seats, fellow theatergoers dressed to the nines, the dancers, the orchestra…I could spend every day there!
Believe it or not, I always go for $30! My tip is to use the $30 for 30 and Under program.
To enroll, you’ll need to submit an ID and be manually approved but once your account is set up, you can access $30 to almost any show (besides The Nutcracker, sadly). As a member of the program, you can get two tickets to any performance to bring a friend or partner (they don’t have to be under 30 years old).
These tickets go fast, so set a reminder for when new performances go on sale. I rely on the NYC Ballet email list to get alerts.
If you’re looking to score affordable tickets to The Nutcracker, I’ve had luck calling on the day of to get last-minute cancellations for $40. And some years, they’ve offered standing room for $40 as well.
2. Lincoln Center LincTix
Lincoln Center Theater’s LincTix program is a hidden gem for theater lovers under 35.
Members get exclusive access to $35 tickets for some of the best shows in town, including Broadway-caliber productions at the Vivian Beaumont Theater.
I’ve seen 50+ Broadway shows at this point and seeing Camelot at the Lincoln Center is definitely in my top five theater experiences!
Like the ballet, this membership is free, but you have to sign up in advance. Once you’re in, you’ll get email alerts when new tickets become available. I’ve found tickets drop in waves, so if you’re looking for a specific show and not seeing tickets, I’d recommend checking back. You can also call the theater, and they can help reserve tickets as well.
3. Manhattan Theatre Club 30 Under 35
Manhattan Theatre Club’s 30 Under 35 program offers $30 tickets to select performances for anyone under 35. This is a great way to see incredible plays and new works before they become Broadway hits.
I have gone several times and scored orchestra seats. Some performances even include post-show interviews with the cast and creative team—perfect for anyone who wants a deeper dive into the show.
4. Culture Pass
I recommend the NYPL Culture Pass to everyone I know and I’m so shocked more people don’t know about it!
If you have a New York Public Library card, you have access to Culture Pass, a program that provides free tickets to museums, cultural institutions, cinemas, and sometimes even theater performances.
Reservations open at the beginning of each month and fill up fast. I have a reminder set for the first of the month and am always able to reserve atleaste something off my bucket list.
5. Metropolitan Opera Fridays Under 40
Opera might seem expensive, but the Metropolitan Opera offers steep discounts for young people through the Fridays Under 40 program.
As the name suggests, if you’re under 40 years old, you can get $40 rush tickets to select Friday performances, often for prime seats.
The best way to grab these is through the opera’s website on the morning of the performance. I would recommend checking regularly as sometimes they extend this offer to performances outside of Fridays.
They also offer a student discount for those who are still in school.
6. IDNYC
IDNYC is the city’s free municipal ID card that comes with many perks, including theater discounts. Cardholders get reduced-price tickets to places like the Public Theater, the Apollo, and even some Broadway shows. The IDNYC card also gets you free or discounted museum admission, so it’s worth having even beyond theater discounts.
7. Roundabout Theatre Hiptix
Roundabout Theatre Company offers $30 tickets for theatergoers aged 18-40 through their Hiptix program. I love that it extends the discount to people up to 40 so you can keep enjoying deals for a little longer.
I always keep an eye on the productions they have, I once saw a play with Katie Holmes for $30 through the program!
8. TDF Membership
The Theater Development Fund (TDF) is behind the famous TKTS booths, but they also offer an exclusive membership program. If you’re eligible—young professionals often qualify—you can get deeply discounted tickets to Broadway and Off-Broadway shows, dance performances, and more.
The TDF membership costs $40 per year, but you’ll easily make that back in just one or two shows. It’s worth it if you plan to see multiple performances.
9. NYC Philharmonic MyPhil
Classical music lovers under the age of 35 can get discounted tickets to the New York Philharmonic through their MyPhil program. Tickets start at just $35 for select performances at David Geffen Hall.
Unlike the NYC Ballet, these discounts apply to some of the biggest concerts of the season. This past holiday season, I got to see Handel’s Messiah! And if you don’t qualify for the 35 and under tickets, you can try to get rush tickets at the box office on the day of the performance for $22.
That concludes this post on NYC theater discounts for young adults.
As you can see, you can catch some of the best cultural experiences in NYC without draining your bank account!
